Britain Takes Ethiopia from Italy

November 27, 1941

What Happened

British and Ethiopian forces defeated Italy in East Africa, ending Italy's brief colonial rule. Emperor Haile Selassie returned from exile to reclaim his throne, while the British military took temporary control to restore order. This marked a major turning point in Italy's colonial ambitions.

Impact on Citizenship

When Britain took control of Ethiopia from Italy, Italians living there faced a crucial decision. They had to choose between keeping their Italian citizenship or becoming Ethiopian citizens. Those who chose Ethiopian citizenship lost their ability to pass Italian citizenship to their children. To maintain Italian citizenship, they were required to leave Ethiopia.
